Neighbourhood Stormwater Management
A design study exploring permeable surfaces, flow routes and maintenance needs.
Problem
The design question is where rainfall runoff accumulates in a neighbourhood with extensive impermeable surfaces and how it affects pedestrian space.
Conditions
This conceptual assessment considers street gradients, existing drainage, open space use and maintenance access.
Options
Permeable paving, rain gardens and managed surface flow routes are compared in terms of space, ground conditions and maintenance.
Implementation
Flow routes are mapped first, followed by an assessment of option locations and maintenance access. This is a design study rather than a report of completed site works.
Outcomes
The study provides a framework connecting drainage decisions with public space use. It reports no measured site performance or completed project results.
Lessons
Maintenance responsibilities, access and data needs belong in early design. Site information and project-specific engineering are required before implementation.
